Generate charades prompts across seven categories and three difficulty levels. Two things here that most charades generators leave out: the prompt stays hidden until the actor taps to reveal it, so you can pass a phone around without spoiling the round, and there is a timer built in so nobody has to find a stopwatch. Every prompt is chosen to be actable — which is a stricter test than simply being a word.

Why use this tool?

Hidden until you tap

Only the actor sees the prompt, and every new one starts hidden again. Pass the phone without anyone catching a glimpse of the next round.

Timer built in

Thirty to a hundred and twenty seconds, with a countdown that turns red in the last ten. No second device, no shouting at a phone stopwatch.

Seven categories, three levels

Actions, animals, jobs, objects, sports, films and situations, each split easy, medium and hard. Filter to suit who is playing.

No repeats

Prompts already used this session are skipped until the filtered pool runs out, so nobody acts the same thing twice in one game.

How this charades word generator works

Every prompt is picked for being actable, which is a narrower test than being a common word. “Brushing your teeth” works because it has a shape your body can make. “Democracy” does not, however familiar the word — and lists that ignore that distinction produce rounds where somebody stands still looking annoyed. The hard tiers lean on situations rather than obscure vocabulary, because the fun comes from a difficult thing to mime rather than a word nobody knows.

Prompts are drawn from your filtered pool without repeating anything already used in the session. When the pool is exhausted it resets rather than refusing to continue, so a narrow filter still keeps playing rather than stopping mid-game.

The reveal is deliberate. A generator that simply displays the word is unusable at a table, because the phone has to travel from the person who pressed the button to the person acting, past everyone guessing. Hiding by default, and re-hiding on every new prompt, makes the physical passing of the device safe.

How to use it

  1. Step 1: Choose categories and difficulty

Tap to switch each on or off. The prompt count updates as you filter.

  2. Step 2: Hand over the phone, then reveal

The actor taps the card to see the prompt. It stays hidden until they do.

  3. Step 3: Start the timer and act

Press the timer button, act it out, then press Next prompt for the following player.

Example usage

A family game night
Actions and animals on easy, so younger players get prompts they can actually mime.
A party with adults
Situations and films on hard, where the comedy comes from watching someone attempt the impossible.
A classroom warm-up
Jobs and objects on easy and medium, with a thirty-second timer to keep a whole class moving.

Frequently asked questions

How do you play charades?

One player acts out a prompt without speaking or making sounds, while their team guesses before the timer runs out. Conventional signals help: holding up fingers for the number of words, tugging an ear for “sounds like”, and drawing a rectangle in the air for a film. Teams alternate, and a point goes to whoever guesses in time.

How long should each round be?

Sixty seconds is the standard and works for most groups. Thirty keeps things frantic and suits younger players with easy prompts; ninety or a hundred and twenty is fairer for hard prompts where the actor needs to build up to it.

Can everyone see the word?

No, and that is the point of the reveal. The prompt is hidden until someone taps the card, and it hides again automatically on every new prompt — so the phone can be passed around the table without spoiling the round.

Are these suitable for children?

The easy tier is written for younger players: everyday actions and familiar animals that are simple to mime. Filter to easy and pick actions and animals for a family game. The hard tier assumes adult reference points.

Will I get the same prompt twice?

Not until the pool you have filtered to runs out. If you narrow to one category on one difficulty the pool is small, so it will cycle sooner — widening the filters gives you longer before anything repeats.
