Generated names

Your names will appear here. Press Generate names to start.

Generate cat names across four styles — classic, food-inspired, mythological and coat-based — with an optional grand title for the full ceremonial version. These are real names you would actually call across a garden rather than invented syllables, because a name you cannot shout is a name you will not use.

Why use this tool?

Four distinct styles

Classic pet names, food-inspired ones, mythological and regal, or names drawn from coat and character. Pick a style or draw from all four.

Grand titles

Turn on the byname for the full form — Biscuit the Unbothered, Pepper Purrington, Luna Keeper of the Warm Spot.

Names you can call

Every name is short enough to shout and clear enough to be heard from a garden, which is the actual test a cat name has to pass.

Private and free

Runs entirely in your browser. No account, no limit on how many batches you generate while you make your mind up.

How this cat name generator works

Unlike the fantasy generators on this site, this one does not assemble names from syllables. Cat names have to work out loud — you will be calling this thing across a garden at dusk for the next fifteen years — and an invented name fails that test immediately. So each style draws on a curated pool of real names that people actually use.

The variety comes from the optional byname instead, which is where the character is. A cat called Biscuit is ordinary; Biscuit the Unbothered is a personality. Bynames are generated in two forms: ready-made epithets, and compound surnames built from a cat word and an ending — Purr plus ington, Whisker plus sworth.

One piece of practical advice the generator cannot give you: cats respond best to names of one or two syllables, ideally ending in a high-frequency vowel sound. That is why so many traditional cat names end in -y or -o. A long ceremonial name is for you; the short version is the one the cat will learn.

How to use it

  1. Step 1: Pick a style

Classic, food-inspired, mythological, coat and character — or Any to mix all four.

  2. Step 2: Decide on a title

Turn the byname on for the full ceremonial form, or leave it off for the everyday name.

  3. Step 3: Generate and shortlist

Press Generate for a batch, copy the ones you like, and say each out loud before deciding.

Example usage

A new kitten
A batch of twelve with titles off, narrowed to three, then tested by calling each one across the room.
Two cats at once
One batch from the food style gives a pair that obviously belong together — Miso and Mochi, Pesto and Pickle.
A cat with opinions
Titles on, until something arrives that matches the animal's actual attitude to your furniture.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a good cat name?

One or two syllables, ending in a bright vowel sound. Cats respond to higher-pitched, sharper sounds, which is why so many traditional cat names end in -y or -o. Avoid anything that sounds like a common command word if you also have a dog.

Will my cat actually learn its name?

Most do, in the sense of recognising that a particular sound is directed at them. Research on domestic cats suggests they distinguish their own name from similar-sounding words, even when a stranger says it. They simply reserve the right not to respond.

Can I use these names for other pets?

Yes, though the styles are tuned for cats. The food-inspired and classic sets work perfectly well for rabbits, ferrets and small dogs. Larger dogs tend to suit longer, lower-sounding names.

Are the mythological names accurate?

They are genuine figures from Greek, Roman, Norse and Egyptian mythology. Bastet is the Egyptian cat goddess, which makes her the obvious choice, and Sphinx is there for the same reason.

How many names can I generate?

Up to a hundred per batch, and there is no limit on batches. Unique mode guarantees no repeats within a single run.
